Bishop Shanahan National School

Swimming Programme 2019

As well as being part of the P.E. Curriculum, water safety has long been part of the SPHE programme that we teach in Bishop Shanahan N.S.  It is always taught in the Spring to Summer term prior to the summer holidays.  Most years, lessons on water safety have been classroom based rather than practical.  However, in 2014 and 2016 the children from 2nd Class were fortunate in being able to participate in the ‘Learn to Swim’ Programme run by South Dublin County Council.  The programme was a huge success.

We are delighted to be able to offer the children in 2nd Class the same opportunity this year.  The South Dublin County Council Swim Programme 2018/2019 for your child will start on Friday, 31st May.  There will be four lessons in total, each taking place in Tallaght Leisure Centre.  The programme, which has been grant-aided by South Dublin County Council, will take place during school hours.  The grant will cover the hire of the pool and tuition costs.  However, there is a charge of €10 per pupil to cover the bus hire.

It is important that each child is prepared for swimming tuition.  The following points may be helpful to you in this preparation:

Each child must

  • Have a bag containing swimming togs, a swimming hat (please note that a child will not be allowed to swim without one) and a large towel.
  • Be able to undress/dress independently.
  • Inform the school if there are any health concerns.
  • Wear the school tracksuit.
